UNFOLDING THE WORD With Dr. Gary Kuhne

We have been learning that temptation is not sin – it is but the initial urging or impulse to make a sin choice. We are responsible for our sin choices and we tend to try to “cover up the guilt” of such sin choices. In vs. 8-10 we see that sin causes us to try to hide from God because His Holiness highlights our essential guilt and lostness. And the proper choice is to admit our sin (confess it) and draw upon the means of forgiveness offered by God, a means ultimately seen in the cross of Christ. In vs. 11-13 we learned that men and women try to blame others for their own choice of sin. Starting in vs. 14 we begin to encounter the consequence of sin choices. In vs. 14-15 we see the consequences for Satan – while Stan was not held accountable for the sin choices of Adam and Eve, he was accountable for the temptation he provided. So the snake became an ongoing object lesson to humanity about our enemy and the promise of Satan’s ultimate defeat at the hands of the Messiah is revealed.

3:1-5 explain 6 strategies followed by the enemy of our soul, Satan, to tempt us into sin. Satan tries to get us to doubt God’s word, he seeks to distort of God’s Word, and tries to get us to add to God’s Word. Yet such temptation did not force Adam and Eve into sin. So God explained what was happening within Eve’s heart to explain to us how temptation can lead to a sin choice in our own lives.

The opening chapters of Genesis explain some critical truths that help us to make sense out of our lives and make sense out of the world in which we find ourselves. Chapter 3 opened with the fall of mankind and we discover that we face a very real and personal enemy, Satan, the author of the “spiritual battlefield” in which we each find our daily lives unfold. 3:1-5 explain 6 strategies followed by this enemy to tempt us into sin. Satan follows crafty, sly temptation, trying to get us to doubt God’s word. Beyond such doubt, Satan fosters distortion of God’s Word and also tries to get us to add to God’s Word. He wants to cast doubt upon God’s intentions in His commands. Ultimately Satan wants to tempt us to seek a self-deification instead of surrendered service to God.

We also discover that God, the Creator of the world, began to show a merciful and gracious solution for sin that offered to those that would choose to repent and believe in His solution. I Kings 19 explains to us how the prophet Elijah fell into a time of great discouragement, what “triggered” the time of discouragement and how he ended up in “pits of discouragement”. We learned God still loved him despite his discouragement and reached out to him to provide both strength and teaching to correct Elijah too limited a view of God and how He works in this world, which was at the root of the discouragement. Chapter 19 ends by explaining how to get out of the “pits” and back into productive service. Such a return involves accepting that God is still in control of circumstances even when the circumstanced perplex us. Such a return involves getting back into surrendered service despite our emotions. And such a return involves being sure we have fellowship with other believers so we are not “alone” when facing hard circumstances.
